What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning

Dentist Blog

Dental cleaning is one of the best ways to prevent gum disease, maintain optimum teeth and gum health and cultivate a bright smile. A little nervousness before a dentist visit is normal. Between the strange noises, the discomfort and the prodding, it is easy to be a little apprehensive. What you need to remember is that for most, the process of dental cleaning is simple and painless.

However, knowing what to expect may help eliminate your fears. Here is what to expect during a dental cleaning

Physical Dental Exam

Before the dental hygienist starts the cleaning process, they examine your mouth. The dental hygienist does a check around your teeth and gums using a small mirror. The goal of this physical exam is to spot any signs of inflamed gums (gingivitis) or any other health concerns.

In case any major issues emerge, they will call the dentist to confirm whether they can proceed with the cleaning.

Removal of Plaque and Tartar

Using the small mirror to see better, the dental hygienist will use a scaler to remove any plaque and tartar forming around your gum line and between your teeth. This involves some gentle scraping, which is normal. If there is an accumulation of tartar, then the dental hygienist will scrape on the same spot to remove it.

Toothpaste Cleaning

Once the dentist hygienist has removed the tartar, the hygienist will use a high-powered electric brush which may produce a grinding noise. Though it may sound scary, it shouldn't be. It helps give your mouth a deep clean and remove any tartar left behind.

The toothpaste used tastes and smells like normal toothpaste, though it can feel a little gritty. This gritty consistency helps to scrub your teeth gently.

Expert Flossing

In case you're wondering, this doesn't mean you shouldn't floss at home. Regardless of whether you floss at home, this step comes next. Your dental hygienist can get between your teeth thoroughly.

This process gets any leftover plaque that the hygienist may have missed in the previous step.

Rinsing

The next step is to rinse your mouth to remove all debris.

Application of Fluoride Treatment

The process of fluoride treatment creates a protectant for your teeth, helping you fight cavities for the next several months. This process involves placing a foamy and sticky paste into a mouthpiece that fits your teeth. The hygienist will leave it on for a minute. Next, the dental hygienist might apply fluoride varnish onto the teeth using a brush.

Once it comes in contact with your saliva, this fluoride varnish will harden.

To maintain optimal oral health, you need to schedule a dental cleaning twice a year. Now that you know what to expect, maybe the process won't be as scary.
