Types of Teeth Whitening Treatments

Dentist Blog

In this day and age, people are increasingly conscious of their appearance, particularly their smile. Discoloured teeth can have a negative impact on a person's life because their confidence levels may drop, making it difficult for them to partake in social activities and have face-to-face conversations. Thankfully, there are highly effective dental whitening treatments available that restore people's confidence by improving the appearance of their teeth.

There are several types of teeth whitening treatments available.

Whitening Toothpastes

These contain special chemicals to remove stains from the surface of teeth. These are an inexpensive option, but keep in mind that these toothpastes will only work on mildly stained teeth, and results can take several weeks to become apparent.

Over-the-Counter Whitening Kits

These include strips, trays and brushes and must be applied to the teeth daily for results to be seen. Various types of chemicals are used. The downside of these is that they can damage teeth enamel over time, weakening the dental structure and making teeth more prone to cavities and damage. Additionally, the over-the-counter trays are not made to size and hence are usually ill-fitting; this means that they irritate and damage the gums. The strong agents used in the kits can leave a burning sensation in the throat.

In-Office Dental Whitening

These are carried out by the dentist at the dental practice. The dentist will recommend which type of treatment is best for the patient. For instance, teeth range from severely discoloured to only mildly discoloured. There are many options available, including whitening kits that patients can take home as well as professional whitening treatments, which are carried out by the dentist over a series of appointments.

Take-home kits consist of trays containing a whitening bleach. This product needs to be regularly applied to the teeth over 2 to 3 weeks to see results. In-office treatment involves applying a hydrogen peroxide-based power bleaching gel which gives almost immediate results, so patients can see an improved smile in an hour or two. This in-office treatment is a little expensive, but definitely worth the money as the results are profound and long-lasting.

One should of course conduct their own research into which type of treatment is best. However, in-office dental treatments are better for more severely stained teeth, where traditional over-the-counter methods simply do not work. Speaking to a dental specialist before selecting a treatment method is also vital to make the best decision.
